电影以一个带弹孔的钢盔特写画面开始。钢盔的主人，美国上士扎克刚刚在敌方的一次枪杀俘虏中侥幸存活，并被父母双亡的韩国小孩（这个韩国小孩叫“Short Round”。和夺宝奇兵第二集中福特的那个东方小搭档叫一个名。显然，卢卡斯和斯皮尔伯格的在编剧时，有意模仿借鉴了富勒的这部作品。甚至连角色的名字都没改！）所救。结伴而行的两人，又陆续碰上黑人卫生兵和一个美国侦查小队。小队的任务是找到一个制高点进行瞭望观察，然后给炮兵部队提供敌人的具体方位以便后者实施炮火打击。几经危险周折，他们最终来找到一个理性的地点...
