前身為警察的菲利浦馬洛（埃利奧特·古爾德 Elliott Gould 飾）現在幹起了私家偵探的活計，儘管他做事極為低調極力避免被捲入麻煩的漩渦，但麻煩事彷彿長了眼睛，緊咬著他不放。這次亦然，當老友深夜找到馬洛讓他將自己送出境外時，看著他躲閃的目光，經驗老道的馬洛心中就有了不詳的預感。果不其然，不久之后，警察就以協助老友殺害妻子的名義將馬洛捉拿歸案。 在得知了朋友命喪黃泉的消息之后，對朋友的清白深信不疑的馬洛發誓要找到事件的真相。與此同時，一個美艷的婦人找到馬洛，委託他尋找自己酗酒而又粗暴的丈夫...
